Six Million Dollar Man
02:26
|
|||
Your feet are moving but you’re not running fast enough.
Your arms are flailing but you’ll never catch the school bus.
Feel the winter freeze in the Chicago breeze.
You are not the Six Million Dollar Man!
Your body’s thin but you’ve always felt invincible.
Your classmates never got your principles.
Your mother used to scream,
“Harold, why are you running so slow??”
The world is spinning but it can’t keep up with you.
Your doctors/teachers/parents don’t know what to do.
Maybe it’s better to feel part machine than fully nothing at all!
They can rebuild you if you want them to,
but why would you want to be anything other than you
Your feet are moving and you’re finally running fast enough.
Your arms are flying cause you’re finally riding that school bus.
(They can rebuild you if you want them to!)
Feel the autumn wind slowly creeping in
You are the Six Million Dollar Man!
You are invincible again!
You are a superhuman!

Broken Arm
02:33
|
|||
Still waiting by the street sign
Like you were told to do. It’ll be fine
Just have to wait for your sister until five
Until she arrives
They broke your arm
Smashed your head into the ground.
You stayed there until you were found
By your sister, now it’s time to kick their ass now.
You want to get away
But where can you go
When you know
You can never be alone?
It’d be nice to fight back for once
Before going home.
You’re shaking while your sister’s punching the shit
Out of a 12 year old kid
While you’re sitting in an ambulance.
It’s time to run.
The teachers are catching on.
Your sister grabs you and then you are gone
By a bandaged broken arm.
You want to get away
But where can you go
When you know
You can never be alone?
It’d be nice to fight back for once
Before going home.
You’d like to get away
But how can you go
When you know
You will be there on your own
Without your sister by your side?
It’s time to go home.

The Intrepid
02:51

Lieutenant Harold, are you ready to report to duty?
Is it time to board the intrepid?
Do the planes seem sturdy enough for you?
You’ll fly a jet plane like you always ever wanted!
You’ll be the soldier that you never had the chance to be!
All you wanted to be was a soldier like your older brother
Lieutenant Harold, will you tell them everything
About your brain and how it works on specific schedules
And gears functioning? What good would that bring?
If you told them about your accommodations
You would never get to fly off the station.
Just stay at home and hold your patience patiently
Don’t tell them about your medications,
your intellectually disadvantaged condition
Just pray and wait. You’ll rise above your station.

Venezuela
05:14
|
|||
Place your bets on the women you’ll never meet
who you’ll only ever greet behind a television screen.
And your sister loves you to say the least,
at least enough that she would be
the one to fly you to your dreams.
There are so many munecas on the street.
Do you think that they want to meet
the voices inside your mind? It just might be
the novellas, all that you’ve seen
were only there so they can be
a sustenance so nourishing.
The country you came to meet
turned out nothing like it seemed
on the television screen,
so it’s time to pack your bags, fly away and say,
“So long Venezuela, you have been too kind
with your guns y tu morenas, it has been just fine.”
Now the boy with gears for brains will forever be afraid.
Who finds love in Venezuela? Who has the time?
The women, all that you’ve ever loved.
Did it ever feel enough
when you could never feel their touch?
Holy FUCK!! How it hurts to feel so young
and bereft of the one thing
you wanted for so long.
The bullets are flying over your head
as you hold onto the ledge
hoping to God you won’t end up dead.
All your bags are packed up on the bed.
Your sister tries calm you down
but there was nothing to be said except,
“So long Venezuela, you have been too kind
with your guns y tu morenas, it has been just fine.”
Now the boy with gears for brains will forever be afraid.
Who finds love in Venezuela? Who has the time?

Heart Attack
00:42
|
|||
This is your heart attack!
It feel like your arms are numb and gone.
It feels like the rocks are stacking on
with more weight, more weight!
Can you handle more weight? more weight?
This is your heart attack!
It’s like an elephant sitting on top of your chest
You know that elephant very well
Your brother knows it.
Your sister knows it.
Your father died from it!
This is your heart attack!

Panama
03:25
|
|||
It’s one hundred and five degrees outside!
It’s unbearable. Your mother will stay in tonight.
But there’s nothing to do when you’re stuck inside.
Take out your pencil and sketch underneath the light.
Well what’s more rewarding when you’re standing on
the court for your team staring down the lawn?
Or when you’re ten feet away from a lovely lady
with your sketchbook you will say,
“Can I draw a picture of you, girl?”
They’ll sit right beside you with their hands crossed
and you will smile.
Trace the lines at the edge of their face
Relax your muscles, all mistakes, they can be erased
Take your time and your breath and your pulse
and what’s left of all of Panama, the games you played in Panama.
Well what’s more rewarding when you’re standing on
the court for your team staring down the lawn?
Or when you’re ten feet away from a lovely lady
with your sketchbook you will say,
Your heart is racing and the sun, it is never ending.
Your heart is burning, you’re the son who’s forever lasting.
(Can I draw a picture of you, girl?)
And we’ll sit right beside you with our hands held
and you will smile.

The home that you met will be the home you’ll leave behind
The homes that you’ve left will happen time after time
All of the rooms that you built will slowly become undone
But I promise there will be singing in the streets when you come

Dolphin Calendar
03:24
|
|||
It’s that time of year again
All the presents are under the tree
All the gifts are wrapped again
as you’re muttering patiently,
“All I want’s a calendar,
A dolphin calendar just for me.”
All year you watch Animal Planet
or the Discovery Channel.
You learn about the aquatic life.
Do you think about how it feels
to spend hours submerged
beneath the surface with no signs of drowning?
You’ll say in your mind
The days are merging seamlessly
You feel stuck in time again
How can clocks tick listlessly?
The arms are still and silent.
It must feel nice to be just like a
dolphin jumping high above the sea
that’s not you, it can be
That’s not you but boy, it can be.

Lullaby
01:15
|
|||
It’s time to go to sleep.
Grab your snack so you can eat by 9:30.
Just sit down and relax.
Turn off the T.V.
You’ve been watching it for hours.
It’s getting late, so please just turn off the T.V.
and say goodnight to your family.
We’ve been out here for hours
by the Christmas tree.
The world outside your room is big.
If you give it a chance and let it in…
But first go to sleep.
You ate your snack, and it is well past 9:30
so lay down and relax.
Sink back into your dreams.
They’ll comfort you as you ease in tomorrow,
just close your eyes and fall asleep.

Puerto Rico

You’re by yourself
in that lonesome house
on top of the mountain
looking over the sea.
You’re talking to yourself
on the balcony.
Breathe in the ocean.
Tune into the chirping coqui.
Well there’s nothing you can say
To make your voices go away
At least you don’t feel nothing after all.
Your father’s passed.
It’s a scary thought
to know that everyone you love
will be dead and gone.
But your mother’s here.
Your sister’s here.
You’ll watch her children grow up
after all these years
There’s nothing to be said
for the breakfast and the bed.
It’s nice to know you have someone after all.
At least you know that you’re someone after all.
Your father built that house from the ground.
His hands callused by brick and tile.
You stayed there for twenty years with no sound
of anyone staying for awhile.
Your father used to beat you with a belt.
His knuckles callused and wrapped in leather.
Your sister’s body was the only armor you held.
Her soft face helped you keep it together.
Did you have anything to say
the day he passed away?
At least you know that he stayed here through it all.
Which memory will you pick?
The leather or the brick?
In the end, he still loved you after all.
Whenever you feel alone,
just remember whose hands built this home.
Your mother loves you, I hope you know
Your sister loves you, I hope you know it’s so.
At least you know you have someone after all
At least you know that we’ll stay here through it all.
At least you know that I’ve been here for it all.
I am the nephew. I have been here forever telling
This is your story, all eternal, forever lasting (We will rebuild you)
I will tell it. I will tell it. I will tell it.
And at the end I will say,
“So long, Tio Harold. You have done just fine
as a man, an uncle, un hijo. Don’t you pay no mind
to the voices in your head. There is no more to be said
for the ways that you’re my hero. I’ll see you home in time.”
